Australian Rules Betting & Odds

Also known as Australian Football or Aussie Rules, Australian Rules Football is the most popular sport in Australia. With its fast-paced play, athleticism, and full-hearted embracing of what it means to be a contact sport, we can see why.

As well as being great fun to watch, Aussie Rules is an ideal sport to bet on. It’s played in Australia on most Fridays and weekends from mid-March to the end of August, with Finals in September. There’s a wide range of Australian Rules betting markets available for each game. With its high-scoring and unpredictable matches, Australian Rules betting favours the bold, and is especially suited to in-play betting.

To get you started with Australian Rules betting, here we explain what bets you can make, how to read Australian Rules odds, and what Aussie Rules events you can bet on.

How Do I Bet on Australian Rules with BoyleSports?

Right here at BoyleSports, you’ll find all your essential Australian Rules betting markets and up-to-date Australian Rules odds for every match in the AFL and more. The most popular bets to place on Aussie Rules Football include:

Outright: A bet on a certain team to win an Aussie Rules competition outright, like the AFL Grand Final.

Match Winner: Bet on the home or away team to win a specific game.

Quarter & Half Winner: Will the home or away team win a specific quarter or the first half, or will they be drawn?

Match Total Points Over/under: Bet on whether the total points scored in a game will be over or under a certain amount, such as will the combined points scored in a match between the Adelaide Crows and the Hawthorn Hawks be either under or over 188.5 points?

Team Total Points Over/under: Will the points scored by a team in a match be over or under a certain amount?

Handicaps Bets: Will a team beat another with a certain points handicap applied, such as will Richmond Tigers still beat Melbourne Demons with a -7.5 points reduction handicap?

To place a bet on Aussie Rules Football, first create a BoyleSports account. Then pick a bet you want to make on this page.

Click on a bet to add it to your betslip at the top right of this page. Add your stake (the amount you want to bet) in the box next to it. You’ll see your Total Stake at the bottom of your betslip, and your Total Potential Return – the overall amount you’ll win if all your bets are successful. Click on the button below to place your bets.

To ensure your Australian Rules betting stays rewarding, make sure you gamble responsibly. Set yourself a limit of how much money in total you’ll wager with, and make sure you don’t exceed it. Only bet with money you can afford to lose.

How Do Odds Work on Australian Rules?

All our Australian Rules betting odds are written as fractional odds, like 5/1. Five to one odds mean you’ll win back five times the value of the bet if it’s successful.

For example, if you won a £1 bet at 5/1, you’d win back £5 plus your original £1 stake for a total of £6.

Fractional odds can look more complicated, such as 11/3, but they always work in the same way. With 11/3 odds, if you made a successful £3 bet, you’d win £11 back, plus your £3 stake for a total of £14. If you made a successful £1 bet, you’d win £3.67 back, plus your original £1, for a total of £4.67.

Take a look at these other examples of fractional odds and payouts to make sure they’re clear:

With a £1 stake at 10/1 odds, the winnings are £10, plus the £1 stake returned, making the total winnings £11.

With a £1 stake at 20/3 odds, the winnings are £6.67, plus the £1 stake returned, making the total winnings £7.67.

With a £1 stake at 8/3 odds, the winnings are £2.67, plus the £1 stake returned, making the total winnings £3.67.

With a £1 stake at 19/24 odds, the winnings are £0.79, plus the £1 stake returned, making the total winnings £1.79.

With a £1 stake at 5/6 odds, the winnings are £0.83, plus the £1 stake returned, making the total winnings £1.83.

The odds you see for any Aussie Rules Football bet are a calculation of how likely that bet is to happen. The odds will depend on a range of factors, like the current form of a team and its players, the history of head-to-head matchups, and the influence of home advantage.

Tips for Australian Rules Betting

To make the most of your Australian Rules betting, make sure you:

Understand the bets you’re placing: Understand every bet you place, including how you win that bet and how it pays out. Click on the i icon above each bet for a simple description of it.

Follow the form of teams and key players: Keep up to date with how teams are playing, league standings, and which important players are in and out of form.

Analyse past results: When betting on matches, review recent results between those two teams.

Analyse team statistics: Make yourself familiar with reviewing the stats of teams to understand underlying performance, from disposals to inside 50s to goal assists.

Pay attention to home ground advantage: Aussie Football teams often perform better at their home grounds, especially as the away team may have had to travel a long distance and may arrive tired.

Look for value in underdogs: The AFL is famed for its unpredictability, and underdogs can often pull off an upset, especially when playing at home or in high-stakes games.

Bet on team margins: AFL games can be high-scoring and winners can be hard to predict, so betting on winning margins can offer good value, safer bets.
